Emperor Haile Selassie I and the United Kingdom: A Royal Bond of Courage and Honor

The Historic Relationship

The United Kingdom holds a deep and powerful place in the life of Emperor Haile Selassie I.
After the brutal invasion of Ethiopia by Mussolini’s Italy in 1935, His Majesty sought support from the world’s great powers. When many nations turned away, it was Britain that provided shelter and respect during Ethiopia’s darkest hour.

In May 1936, Emperor Haile Selassie I arrived in Britain after delivering his famous appeal to the League of Nations in Geneva — an appeal against injustice that shook the world.

The Emperor lived at Fairfield House in Bath, England, during his exile (1936–1941).
Even in exile, he carried himself with imperial dignity, gaining the admiration of the British people.

Royal Connections

  • Welcomed by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother).
  • Built strong ties with British political figures like Winston Churchill.
  • Britain helped organize and support the patriotic Ethiopian resistance during World War II.

In 1941, with the help of British forces and Ethiopian patriots, Haile Selassie triumphantly returned to Ethiopia, reclaiming his throne.

“Justice is a product of strength tempered by mercy.” — Haile Selassie I

Honors and Recognition

  • Received as a world statesman and King of Kings.
  • Honored with public ceremonies, private audiences, and international tributes.
  • Fairfield House remains today a symbol of gratitude and remembrance, serving the community in Bath.

Legacy of the Visit

The relationship between Haile Selassie I and the United Kingdom shaped:

  • Ethiopia’s place in global politics.
  • The rise of Pan-African movements that drew inspiration from his struggles and dignity.
  • A lasting image of royalty, resistance, and righteous leadership.

Even today, the bond between Ethiopia and the UK is partly built upon the respect and brotherhood established by Haile Selassie I.
