About this Course

Haile Selassie I Palace, also known as the Jubilee Palace, holds great historical and cultural significance in Ethiopia. Located in Addis Ababa, it was originally constructed as a residence for Emperor Haile Selassie I, who reigned from 1930 to 1974.

The decision to convert the palace into a university stemmed from a desire to preserve the site’s heritage while also promoting education and intellectual growth. Recognizing the importance of the location, the Ethiopian government decided to establish a prestigious institution that would combine academic excellence with the rich historical context of the palace.

Extensive renovations were undertaken to accommodate the university’s needs while maintaining the architectural integrity of the original structure. The palace’s spacious rooms were converted into classrooms, lecture halls, and laboratories, providing an elegant and unique learning environment for students and faculty. The university’s administrative offices were set up in areas such as the former reception halls and administrative wings.

The surrounding grounds and gardens of the palace were transformed into lush green spaces, creating serene and picturesque settings for students to study, relax, and engage in extracurricular activities. The palace’s grand hall, which once hosted state functions and ceremonial events, was repurposed into a central library, housing a vast collection of books, journals, and digital resources.

To commemorate the legacy of Haile Selassie I, certain sections of the palace were preserved as museums or exhibition spaces. These areas display artifacts, photographs, and historical documents that highlight the life and achievements of the Emperor, allowing visitors and members of the university community to explore Ethiopia’s rich history.
