What Does a Pharmacy Nurse Consultant Do?
A pharmacy nurse consultant establishes relationships with pharmacy patients, helps educate patients on their diseases and conditions, ensures patient compliance with treatment plans, and elicits the necessary information from patients during casual interactions. As a pharmacy nurse consultant, you may hold a medication pass to issue medications to patients, as medication administration is a crucial part of pharmacy work. Your responsibilities cover consulting with patients, supporting pharmacists’ work, ensuring proper storage and handling of medication, and even overseeing medication audit practices. You also inspect medication and prescriptions, explain medications and side effects to patients, and supervise in-pharmacy clinic events as part of your pharmacy duties.
How to Become a Pharmacy Nurse Consultant
To become a pharmacy nurse consultant, you must first become a registered nurse (RN) or nurse practitioner (NP). Earning licensure as a registered nurse requires either an associate or bachelor’s degree in nursing or a hospital-based diploma. After you earn an RN degree, you must obtain licensure from your state via a nursing exam. Becoming an NP requires a graduate degree in nursing. After you become a nurse, you then need to gain varied experience in areas like long-term care or another clinical setting. Employers may request qualifications like experience with medical records or medication administration or skills in caring for patients in long term facilities.
