Background
Kenya had just emerged from colonial rule after years of fierce resistance, most notably the Mau Mau uprising. As the first African monarch to visit post-independence Kenya, Emperor Haile Selassie I came not just as a head of state—but as a symbol of hope, strength, and divine resilience.
He was received by President Jomo Kenyatta, leader of Kenya’s liberation movement. Their meeting represented the unity of African kingship and revolution, monarchy and modern statehood.
Royal Reception
Haile Selassie was welcomed with great honor and cultural ceremony:
- Traditional dances, blessings, and parades were held in Nairobi and Mombasa.
- He addressed the Kenyan Parliament, praising their victory over colonialism.
- Thousands lined the streets, cheering “Ras Tafari!” and “Long live the King of Kings!”
His Message to Kenya

- Unity is the foundation of African progress.
- The freedom Kenya fought for must be guarded by justice and wisdom.
- Africa must never again bow to foreign domination.
“Kenya’s struggle is not hers alone. Her triumph is Africa’s triumph. And her future must shine as a light to guide our continent.”
— Haile Selassie I, Nairobi, 1964
