A meticulously researched history of higher education in Ethiopia from its earliest promulgation through the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church to its institutionalization with the development and expansion of the Haile Selassie I University. Written by Dr. Aklilu Habte, a former President of the University (1969-1974), who helped Haile Selassie realize his vision for the development and expansion of higher education in Ethiopia. Dr. Habte would later serve as Director of Education and Training for World Bank and then as Chief of UNICEF’s Education Division and Special Advisor to UNICEF’s Executive Director. He has, since, held consultancies with these agencies, Association of African Universities, and Forum for African Women Educationalists. Reviews “The first chapter…I believe is a testament to the excellence of the content and clarity and organization of the author. The chapter is full of gems. A few examples include the written notes of Yared’s church music, the art of preparing parchment and wooden book covers, as well as mixing ink of different colors. I used to see my grandfather reading his Psalms of David, written on parchment, every morning but I was oblivious of the work that went into producing that book in his hands. I have also been oblivious to the work and thought used to build the Orthodox Tewahedo Churches.” “A good book would make you see the world in a different light. This book succeeded in doing that for me. Thank you to Dr Aklilu. Congratulations on a great and authentic Ethiopian literature. —Dr. Wondwessen Bekele
